Frequently Asked Questions

How the Dojo is different from other courses

What can I expect in the Dojo?
The Dojo uses high-quality video and audio instruction, guided journeys, play-alongs, multiple types of musical notation, comprehensive diagrams, and other material to help you develop the skills and abilities to be the player you've always wanted to be.
How does the Dojo work?
A fundamental operating principle here at the Dojo is that you are your best instructor. You know what you can or cannot do, what you need to learn—this is not "one size fits all"! Our mission is to create an environment in which you can discover your unique connection to music, clarify your goals and aspirations, and create a development plan to move you towards those.
Can I really avoid "learning theory"?
There are many different approaches to learning to play the guitar or music theory. Rather than learning "theory" for its own sake, Dojo classes are designed to introduce music or guitar theory at the "right time" so that it's relevant to and supportive of your learning goals and objectives. It's probably better to think about this as "Applied Theory" than just "Theory"!
What makes Dojo methods useful/effective?
Whether it's through forum discussions, sharing performance and feedback videos, or participating in online events, the Dojo is all about engagement. The most significant development occurs when we are fully engaged -- with ourselves, others, and new situations that call on us to "up our game."
Isn't this just traditional learning repackaged?
No. While there are some similarities to traditional programs, exercises, and resources contained within the Dojo are intended to be used as a means to various ends -- discovering your unique connection to music, cultivating your ability to deeply listen, and being able to generate practical, actionable insights that take you to the next level on your musical journey.
What kind of feedback can I expect to get?
Whether you're using a job aid, taking a self-assessment exercise, receiving comments on a performance challenge, or getting a recommendation for resources that will boost your development, the Dojo is a place for you to get answers to important questions on your musical journey. Meaningful, targeted feedback on how you're progressing is an essential component of the programs in the Dojo.
